How It Works

How MemoHoney Works: the nitric oxide chain, step by step

MemoHoney's four amino-acid rows are nitric oxide precursors. Nitric oxide relaxes blood vessel walls, and the seller's argument is that better flow means better thinking. The chemistry of the first three steps is settled. What is not settled is whether raising nitric oxide changes cognition at all, and the cleanest trial of that question found it did not.

A mechanism page that follows the chain to its end rather than stopping at the flattering middle.

The mechanism

The chain MemoHoney is built on

Six steps. Three are settled chemistry, one is neutral and two belong to other stories.

Nitric oxide synthase converts arginine into nitric oxide

This is textbook biochemistry. The enzyme takes L-arginine and molecular oxygen and produces nitric oxide plus citrulline as a by-product. Nitric oxide diffuses into the smooth muscle of the vessel wall and relaxes it, so the vessel widens and flow increases at the same pressure.

Widened vessels mean more blood reaches the tissue behind them

Also settled, and the reason nitric oxide chemistry won a Nobel Prize. It is the mechanism behind nitrate sprays for angina and behind every PDE5 inhibitor on the market, which is why those drugs appear in this site's interaction list.

Swallowed arginine largely fails to arrive

Swallowed arginine meets arginase twice over, once in the intestinal wall liver before it reaches the circulation. This is why the blood-pressure literature works at four grams a day and upward, and why pushing past nine grams achieves nothing further (the 2022 dose-response meta-analysis).

Citrulline is the better route, and this label uses it twice

Citrulline is not touched by arginase on the way through. It reaches the kidney, is converted to arginine there, and raises plasma arginine more reliably than arginine itself. The dose that did it was three grams twice a day (the 2008 pharmacokinetic study).

Beta-alanine is on a different circuit entirely

It has no role in nitric oxide. It is the precursor for carnosine, a muscle buffer, and it takes four weeks at four to six grams a day to load (the sports nutrition position stand). Its presence in a memory capsule is the one step in this chain that does not connect to the others.

Niacin runs on the energy side rather than the flow side

Niacin becomes NAD, which every cell uses to turn food into usable energy. That is a genuine link between this vitamin and brain function, and it is a link about adequacy rather than about extra (the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements niacin fact sheet).

Honest critique

Where the MemoHoney argument runs out

The section a seller would leave out, kept in one place.

The experiment that tested this idea directly

Dietary nitrate is the most reliable way to raise nitric oxide by mouth, more reliable than any amino acid. A thirteen-week randomised trial gave overweight and obese older adults escalating doses of nitrate-rich beetroot juice and measured cognitive function and cerebral blood flow directly. Neither changed (the thirteen-week cerebral blood flow trial).

That is one pilot trial in one population and it does not close the question. It is, however, the cleanest test anybody has run of the specific claim this capsule is sold on, and a reader deciding about a blood-flow memory product should have seen it.

A second trial combined a nitric oxide precursor with exercise training and looked for a joint effect on vascular and cerebrovascular measures (a 2020 trial combining a nitric oxide precursor with training). Work of that kind is where the interesting answers in this field will come from, and none of it has yet produced a result that would justify the sentences on a memory capsule's marketing page.

There is one positive cognition trial in the arginine literature and it is worth naming precisely. Healthy young adults given a single 1.5 g dose of inositol-stabilised arginine silicate did better on several cognitive measures than on placebo (the one acute arginine cognition trial). That compound is a silicate complex, it is not any of the four amino acids on this label, and a single acute dose in twenty-year-olds is a narrow finding. It is evidence about that molecule.

One more caution belongs here, because it is the kind a citation list usually swallows. A 2019 pooled analysis reporting that citrulline lowers blood pressure circulated widely and is still quoted on supplement pages (the retracted 2019 meta-analysis itself). Its journal withdrew it in 2021 (the 2021 retraction notice). Nothing about citrulline's pharmacokinetics changed when that happened, and the newer pooled analyses stand on their own. But a withdrawn number is not a weaker number, it is not a number at all, and this desk would rather print the notice than quietly delete the row.

What is plausible

What MemoHoney could plausibly do, stated conservatively

Four claims this desk would defend, and the reason each is modest.

Cover a niacin shortfall, if you have one

The most defensible thing in the bottle. Adequate B3 matters for cellular energy and a deficiency state produces reversible cognitive symptoms. Most people eating a normal diet are not short of it, which is why this is an honest possibility rather than a benefit.

Build a daily habit that other things attach to

Not a pharmacological effect and not nothing. Buyers who take a morning capsule tend to be buyers who also started sleeping at a fixed time and walking after dinner. The capsule is often the anchor rather than the cause.

Raise plasma arginine a little

Citrulline does this at gram doses. Whether a capsule's share of a gram moves the marker at all is unknown and unmeasured, and no page here will claim it does.

Nothing on a one-week horizon

Every mechanism above takes weeks or is a nutritional adequacy argument. The commonest complaint on this desk is about week one, and it is a complaint the mechanism section predicts.

Testing it honestly

How to tell whether MemoHoney is doing anything for you

Four steps that turn a month of capsules into something you can actually read.

Self-assessment of memory is close to worthless, which is why the trials in this field use tests rather than questionnaires. People who expect an improvement notice one, and people who have forgotten what week one felt like cannot compare against it.

The practical workaround is to write down, on day one, the two or three specific lapses that prompted the purchase. Not "my memory is bad" but "walked into the garage twice and forgot why", with a date. At week six, read the note. That is a crude test and it is far better than nothing.

  • Keep every other variable as still as you can for the first month. Starting a capsule and a new sleep schedule in the same week tells you nothing about either.
  • Pick a measurable proxy if you can: how often you look up a password you know, how far into a page you get before re-reading.
  • Expect nothing before week three, and treat anything in week one as the ordinary noise of a good night's sleep.
  • Count the capsules left in the bottle at day 30. Adherence is the thing most likely to have gone wrong, and it is the only variable entirely in your control.
